Has there ever been a factory painted black minimoog?
Mine is from 1980. The paint (re-paint) is done so meticuously that it's hard to believe anyone would have gone to the trouble.
Thanks,

As far as I know there wasn't.
The Mini pre-prototypes were firstly made of black modular modules without a (wooden) case, but the "official" Minimoogs - I mean the ones in production - were all with a black interface and a wooden case. |

Sorry but I think it does. The Mini is loved for his sound first - that's obvious - but still most Mini-adepts love its design including the wooden case as well.
But you could never know; if you'd want to sell it maybe some hiphop people - where the Minimoog is a kind of 'cool' lately - will prefer the black case to the wooden case.
Maybe you can put it on Ebay with a minimum amount of $1850 or something, with some advertising blah blah like "the ultimate hip hop bass instrument", and sell it if you have a high bidder.
With the $$ you can (re-)buy a classic one with natural wooden case, if required also manufactured in 1980.
Good luck.

Thanks, I like the marketing spin. But I'm just having too much fun with it right now. It's been dormant in my studio for years. Not any more.

I have seen several with nice black paint jobs, but all added later. RUSH had a sparkle red one! |

and I am trying to decide how to take off the black paint.
I guess another option would be to have a new case made for it. |

Mine was painted ugly flat black when I got it but some rubbing alcohol took the paint right off. The wood underneath was in pretty good shape.
I discovered it was taking the black paint off by accident while I was cleaning the front panel and some of the pat from the case came off on the rag.
Lots people painted their old, undesirable Minimoogs black in the 80's because wooden synths were considered uncool. Strange, huh?
Good luck. |
